Phytoplankton assemblage shifts with dissolved organic matter properties: A functional perspective for sentinel lakes

چکیده

Climate change is altering both dissolved organic matter (DOM) properties and phytoplankton dynamics in lakes. High-altitude lakes are good sentinels of global change. However, their value as depends on how well we understand functioning. This study analysed physical, chemical biological data during three pre-defined periods running from complete ice-cover right to the end ice-free season, a high-altitude oligotrophic lake. A functional approach was used assess relationships between DOM planktonic community vary over time. Phytoplankton found occur with shifts DOM. During ice-influenced period, February thaw, dominated by small autotrophs mixotrophic flagellates sediment terrestrial origin pool diversity richness increased post-snowmelt overturn when pool. Finally, large siliceous autotrophs, competitive under low nitrogen concentrations high temperature, almost exclusively late summer period (LSP). Increased biomass meant that phytoplankton-derived dominant LSP. These phenological changes resulted at base food web. Based variables study, it can be deduced nature relationship bacteria progressively shifted strong top-down control exerted towards predominantly bottom-up season. Synthesis. Using field survey starting lasting season sentinel lake, show seasonal link plankton traits. Differences environmental conditions explained variation structure function, pointing microbial web interactions. Our research suggests that, climate change, balance mixotrophy autotrophy bacterioplankton will large, vegetated catchments.

Shifts in the Source and Composition of Dissolved Organic Matter in Southwest Greenland Lakes Along a Regional Hydro-climatic Gradient

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) concentration and quality were examined from Arctic lakes located in three clusters across south-west (SW) Greenland, covering the regional climatic gradient: cool, wet coastal zone; dry inland interior; and cool, dry ice-marginal areas. We hypothesized that differences in mean annual precipitation between sites would result in a reduced hydrological connectivity ...

Seasonal Shifts in Bacterial Community Responses to Phytoplankton-Derived Dissolved Organic Matter in the Western Antarctic Peninsula

Bacterial consumption of dissolved organic matter (DOM) drives much of the movement of carbon through the oceanic food web and the global carbon cycle. Understanding complex interactions between bacteria and marine DOM remains an important challenge. We tested the hypothesis that bacterial growth and community succession would respond differently to DOM additions due to seasonal changes in phyt...

Impact of dissolved organic carbon, phosphorus, and grazing on phytoplankton biomass and production in experimental lakes

Phytoplankton biomass and production in lakes tend to be increased by phosphorus input and decreased by grazing or high levels of colored, dissolved organic carbon (DOC). We estimated and compared the effects of these three factors by using data from three lakes that were manipulated during 1991-1995, and data from a reference lake. Multivariate probability distributions of chlorophyll or prima...
